MANILA – Port of Iloilo was recognized as one of the top-performing ports during the 115th founding anniversary celebration of the Bureau of Customs.
The port, which includes a subport in Pulupandan, Negros Occidental, topped the Category B. It collected P2.113 billion in revenue, with a surplus of P24 million, last year.
Other awardees in the same category were the ports of Cebu, Davao and Clark.
The awardees have exceeded their collection targets.
Ports under Category B have a target of at least P19 billion but not less than P1 billion.
Port of Iloilo officer-in-charge Jose Naig and Subport of Pulupandan acting collector Renevic Soliman received the award.
Port of Batangas and subports of Siain (Quezon) and Puerto Princesa were also cited under Category A (target: P20 billion and above).
The celebration and the awarding ceremony were on Wednesday, Feb. 8.
President Rodrigo Duterte was present. He encouraged the Customs to “simplify procedures and centralize operations.”
He also hoped the bureau “will no longer be one of the most corrupt agencies (in the country) in the coming years.”
Customs deputy commissioner Edward James Dy Buco claimed their collection rose 97 percent during the first eight months of the Duterte administration.
“The responsibility to collect revenues for the country is an extremely challenging task,” Dy Buco said. “Equally challenging is the duty to protect the country’s borders from entry of unlawful items and antisocial goods.”
Their P206.5-billion second semester collection in 2016 was 8-percent higher than the P190.6 billion in the first semester, he said./PN
