ILOILO City – A jail officer of the Iloilo District Jail (IDJ) in Barangay Nanga, Pototan, Iloilo has been alleged of beating inmates and sneaking liquor and marijuana into the prison facility.
A certain Lily, relative of an inmate, made the allegations against Jail Officer 1 Rene Venancio in a radio interview.
She also claimed Venancio was making money from the jail cooperative and giving special treatment to detained suspected high-value drug suspects.
But IDJ warden Superintendent John Montero belied Lily’s allegations and defended Venancio.
“Venancio has been my close-in bodyguard since I started receiving threats on Oct. 1. It’s impossible for him to maltreat inmates. Where ever I go Venancio is with me,” said Montero.
He challenged inmates allegedly beaten to come out and file complaints against Venancio.
“They can seek help from the media so we can conduct a formal investigation. Manabat ang may sala kay wala ko ginaapinan tawo ko kun nakasala,” said Montero.
Venancio could not be reached for comment as of this writing.
The warden reiterated the strict enforcement of rules covering the bringing of goods into the IDJ; all are thoroughly inspected.
“I never give special treatment to inmates. I have also instructed to my men to minimize entering cells to avoid getting close to inmates,” said Montero.
According to the warden, he received information that illegal drugs are being smuggled into the IDJ over the fence near the area where inmates do their gardening.
“Ginahaboy sa sulod sang garden then kuhaon nila kun mag-gardening na,” said Montero.
He thus instructed jail guards to thoroughly inspect the area before the inmates start their gardening./PN
