MANILA – Sen. Leila de Lima said on Wednesday that her ex-bodyguard and driver Ronnie Dayan was forced to implicate her to the illegal drug trade by the administration.
“It appears that Ronnie Dayan has been successfully turned into another one of my accusers by this Administration,” de Lima said in a statement on Wednesday.
At a press briefing in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Dayan admitted that he was ordered by de Lima, who was then secretary of the Justice department, to meet up with Espinosa five times in 2014. Dayan, however, opposed the claims made by New Bilibid inmates that he received drug money from them.
Mga limang beses akong kumuha ng pera kay Kerwin,” added Dayan, who admitted having an illicit affair with de Lima that lasted seven years.
De Lima challenged her critics to charge her before the courts so she could finally prove “all these fiction stories of the underworld” wrong.
Unperturbed by the arrest and purported admissions of Dayan, the newbie senator said such developments would allow her to “put this issue to a close.”
“I still hope that the authorities, in the exercise of their duties, act within the bounds of the law, without abusing their powers and using force and intimidation on purported witnesses, including Ronnie Dayan,” she said.
Dayan was arrested by the Philippine National Police on Tuesday due to his failure to appear at the hearings conducted by the House Committee on Justice./PN
