MANILA – Senators criticized the “vulgar” and “explicit” attacks against individuals opposing the burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
Sen. Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV called for a “sense of decency” among Filipinos who air their sentiments for or against the Marcos burial through the social media.
“Magkakaiba man tayo ng pananaw sa mga isyu, hindi pa rin dapat mawala ang respeto sa isa’t isa at pagiging disente sa social media,” Aquino said.
“Kung paano tayo sa labas, kasama ng ating mga kaibigan at pamilya, dapat ganoon din ang ating pagkilos at ugali sa social media.”
The lawmaker also reminded that social media, as a public space, must be free from discrimination, hate speech and verbal abuse.
Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, for his part, described the online sexual assault of women protesting against the sudden hero’s burial for Marcos as “not Filipino” and “sobrang bastos.”
Instead of defending their positions, Pangilinan said that some online netizens resorted to name-calling, slut-shaming, and other gender-based remarks.
“If we don’t agree with others’ statements, let’s give our own arguments. Let’s not cuss each other. It is degrading,” the senator said.
He added that Filipinos are best known for their “respectful” and “loving” traits.
Earlier, Aquino filed a resolution that seeks to determine how responsible social media use is being taught in Philippine schools.
At the hearing, the lawmaker urged the Department of Education to encourage the students to fight trolling and spread of misinformation online./PN
