MANILA – After successfully retaining the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix tiara late last year, the Foton Tornadoes could be out of the arena when the new season opens next month.
Tornadoes team manager Diane Santiago said that, from its Grand Prix lineup, only five players opted to stay while the seven others chose to try their chances with other teams.
Among those who are still with the Tornadoes are sisters Dindin Santiago-Manabat and Jaja Santiago, University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses star Ennajie Laure, Maika Ortiz and Ivy Perez.
Those who left the team are Bacolodnon Patty Jane Orendain, Angeli Araneta, Carol Cervesa, Fatima General, Kara Acevedo, and Cherry Rondina, who is reportedly being lured by the Petron Tri-Activ Spikers.
“We really want them to stay. We ask all of them to sign a new contract with us pero yun, it’s their decision talaga not to stay in the team. Wala namang inalis,” said Santiago.
“Siyempre at first nagulat kami kasi di ba okay naman yung season (GrandPrix). Pero yun nga, (nagka) change of heart din sila. We stick to it na lang na hindi na lang namin sila pinilit (na mag stay), ini-let go nalang din namin,” she added.
With only five players remaining on its roster, the Moro Branislav-mentored Tornadoes might not participate in the Invitational Cup on February. Their stint in the All-Filipino Cup and the Grand Prix is also uncertain.
“The coaches just planned to recruit other players. With the possible line-up naman, okay naman din ‘yung mabubuo. Hopefully,” Santiago said. “We’re just going to prepare for the AWCC (Asian Women’s Club Championship).”/PN
