ILOILO – Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. will take his oath as new member of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) of President Rodrigo Duterte on Nov. 23.
His son and namesake, the congressman of the 3rd District, will also be taking his oath on the same date.
House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, PDP-Laban secretary-general, will administer the oath-taking, said the elder Defensor, but the venue has yet to be decided.
Alvarez invited the Defensors to join PDP-Laban in August.
According to the governor, his other son, Sangguniang Panlalawigan member Lawrence Defensor, will also be joining PDP-Laban and take oath with them.
“Indi na gid mapunggan” was how the governor described his transfer from the Liberal Party to the President’s party.
He said some members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, mayors, vice mayors and town councilors of the 3rd District will also be joining PDP-Laban.
The 3rd District is made up of the towns of Badiangan, Bingawan, Cabatuan, Calinog, Janiuay, Lambunao, Maasin, Mina, and Pototan.
The governor cited “practical politics” in deciding to leave Liberal Party. The political career of his son, Cong. Defensor, was a big factor, he admitted.
“I told PDP-Laban my son is interested to become governor. I made the message clear,” said Defensor.
The governor, now in his third term, is barred by law from seeking a fourth consecutive term.
“If Toto (Congressman Defensor) wants to win an election, the administration party can greatly help him. That is practical politics. That is the reality of politics. We don’t have the money to buy votes,” explained the candid Defensor./PN
