BORACAY – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) wanted to intensify its campaign on proper waste management in the island.

DENR Region 6 and the Environmental Management Bureau launched the Dalaw-Turo, a house-to-house visitation program to educate the residents on proper waste segregation and disposal and the ordinances covering such.

Garbage collected from households and establishments in the island were directly transported to a landfill in mainland Malay after the operation of a centralized materials recovery facility Barangay Manoc-Manoc was stopped by the DENR.

The DENR has also monitored water quality in the island’s beaches to make sure it’s safe for swimming.

Last month, the Environment department cleared-out the drainage systems of commercial establishments that improperly discharge wastewater.

Municipal Ordinance No. 297 requires the mandatory connection of waste water discharge to any sewerage system, construction of sewerage treatment plant or a standard septic tank by residential buildings, dive shops and aqua sports, resorts, hotels, lodging houses, bars and restaurants, laundry shops.
