BACOLOD City – Resorts in Negros Occidental must adhere to all existing laws, especially those concerning the environment, said Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr.
Marañon fielded this comment in the wake of the environmental issues that the world-famous Boracay Island faces.
The island, located in Malay, Aklan, is under fire for its sewerage and garbage problems.
Marañon nixed no words in expressing his disgust over the mess that he said island resort owners caused by not following the sanitation code, like the unregulated release of untreated water.
“Nagpanumpa na ’ko gani nga indi na magbalik sa Boracay…pangsot kaayo,” the governor said.
He added that water pollution in the island is a “perennial problem.”
Marañon said he wants to make sure that resorts in the province, especially in southern Negros Occidental, won’t follow the “recklessness” of their counterparts in Boracay.
He also urged Negrenses or tourists to report to his office Negros Occidental resorts violating the environmental laws.
Marañon commended President Rodrigo Duterte’s call to restore Boracay.
Early last month, the President threatened to shut down Boracay – which he called a “cesspool” – if its environmental woes remain unfixed within six months.
Duterte has tasked the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Interior and Local Government to solve the island’s problems.
On Tuesday, Duterte announced that he would put Boracay under a state of calamity to pave way for the island’s rehabiliation./PN
