MANILA – The Department of Justice said they received reports that high public officials in Pangasinan and other northern provinces were coddling Ronnie Dayan, former driver of Sen. Leila de Lima who was linked to the drug trade.
“Diyan siya nagtatago, diyan siya nagpapalipat-lipat,” Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre told a press briefing at Malacañang on Wednesday.
The House of Representatives issued a warrant of arrest against Dayan when he failed to show up at an inquiry into the drug trade at the New Bilibid Prison.
At the height of the congressional hearing Aguirre said the National Bureau of Investigation staged a manhunt against Dayan but was unsuccessful.
Dayan allegedly received millions of pesos worth of drug money purportedly used to finance de Lima’s campaign.
The Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption offered a P1-million reward for information leading to Dayan’s arrest.
It also filed drug trafficking cases before the Justice department against de Lima and Dayan.
Aguirre hoped the reward money will be “instrumental” in the arrest of Dayan, also de Lima’s former lover and bodyguard.
“Palagay ko malaki ang mangyayaring epekto niyan and hopefully we will be able to get him,” the secretary said./PN
