BACOLOD City – Mayor Evelio Leonardia appealed to anyone willing to donate a lot that may be made into another public cemetery.
“This is just a wide call,” Leonardia said. “Kon may ara sang mga pamilya nga gusto nila may legacia sila, ma-donate sila property para mahimo naton nga public cemetery.”
Leonardia said the North Public Cemetery along Burgos Street is now “very crowded.”
The City Health Office (CHO) conducted a sanitary inspection on Nov. 2 in response to complaints that the General Services Office (GSO) received.
Most of the complaints were about missing tombs and remains in the cemetery.
The CHO findings revealed that the cemetery was already full and it cannot anymore cater to additional interments.
The findings also showed that the cemetery does no longer meet the 25-meter and 50-meter distance limit from a dwelling house and source of water supply, respectively, according to Presidential Decree No. 856, or the Code on Sanitation of the Philippines.
Leonardia said he already asked City Administrator John Orola to “take a good look” at the cemetery so that appropriate measures may be taken.
“Either we rehabilitate it or whatever,” Leonardia said.
Last week, Councilor Wilson Gamboa said he will file before the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) a resolution that will require the city’s Cemetery Regulatory Board to convene.
The board is composed of the mayor as chairperson, city health officer as vice chairperson, and the chairpersons of the SP committees on public works and health, GSO head, city planning and development office coordinator, city engineer, and representatives from the Liga ng mga Barangay as members.
Leonardia said he has yet to receive a copy of the resolution./PN
