SAN JOSE, Antique – Drug dependents who surrendered to the authorities with the help of their barangay council formed an association to show their willingness to reform and overcome drug addiction.
“President Dutete’s crackdrown against illegal drugs is making headway in our barangay and with that several drug dependents surrendered and are seeking the government’s help,” Kagawad Domingo Dalumpines of Barangay San Angel said.
Dalumpines said these self-confessed drug users wanted to form an association so they could monitor each other and commit to become productive citizens of society.
The drug dependents’ association is called Barangay San Angel Surrenderees Association headed by “Butch”, 38, as president.
The association’s president said he supports Duterte’s relentless campaign against illegal drugs. He promised that together with his group they will stick to their commitment to reform and stay away from drugs.
The San Angel barangay council will help the drug dependents rehabilitate themselves and return to the fold of society as productive members by engaging them in several activities – like sports, cleanup drives and other activities.
The council will likewise iron out programs to look for livelihood projects and employment through proper coordination with government and non-government institutions.
Superintendent Norby Escobar of the San Jose police station was happy with the unique commitment of drug dependents from Barangay San Angel who have shown their sincerity in charting a new way of life. Escobar said he will make the association a model for other barangays in San Jose. (PIA/PN)
