ILOILO City – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will be reaching out to more indigent senior citizens this year for its Social Pension Program.
According to Director Rebecca Geamala, they are targeting 394,256 elderly – five times bigger than last year’s target.
For 2017 DSWD has allotted P2.3 billion for the Social Pension Program.
Last year, 78,706 elderly beneficiaries availed themselves of P472.2-million pension.
The Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010 mandates DSWD to provide financial aid to the elderly through the Social Pension Program.
Qualified to receive the P500 monthly stipend are senior citizens who are frail, sickly or have disabilities; are not receiving pension from the Social Security System (SSS), Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), or Veterans Pension; and do not have a permanent source of income or regular support from relatives.
The pension is distributed every quarter at P1,500 or a total of P6,000 annually through cash payment by DSWD field offices or city/municipal social welfare and development offices.
The program aims to augment the daily subsistence and other medical needs of indigent senior citizens.
It is in line with the fulfillment of the obligation of the government to protect the most vulnerable sector through social protection, and for the full implementation of the Republic Act 9994.
It also aims to improve the living condition of eligible indigent senior citizens./PN
