The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in the province gave safety tips to consumers who buy items from the internet.
Trade and industry specialist Joy Cardinal said they are actively promoting online shopping safety in celebration of the Consumer Welfare Month in October, with the theme, “Consumer Rights in the Digital Age.”
Cardinal said many shop online because it’s easy. “They can make an order with just a click,” she said.
But such “freedom” comes with responsibilities, Cardinal added.
Cardinal advised online shoppers must use their personal computers at home or laptops in making purchases.
Those who make transactions in computer or internet shops were encouraged to use strong passwords, or those that are a combination of upper and lower case letters, symbols and numbers, for their accounts.
Always make sure that the account/s are logged off after transacting in these places, Cardinal stressed.
“Buyers must only transact with a reputable online merchant,” Cardinal said.
When in doubt, Cardinal said the buyers must “trust their instinct” and cancel the transaction.
They must also refrain from clicking links that redirects them to malicious content.
Cardinal said buyers must be wary of sellers who rush the transaction or require a bank account deposit.
Moreover, consumers were encouraged to research about the seller, like reading the frequently asked questions posted in its webpage.
Whether online or not, Cardinal said consumers must be vigilant, meticulous and discerning. (PIA/PN)
