PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte is set to visit Sagay City, Negros Occidental next week to distribute lands, months after the murder of nine sugar farmers there.

In a speech in Buluan, Maguindanao on Monday evening, the President said he has ordered the Department of Agrarian Reform to place some lands in Sagay under government control.

“That was given by the (Spanish) colonizers. Ang mga nandoon ‘yung mga favored few,” Duterte said.

The planned distribution of lands in Sagay comes four months after nine farmers were killed for allegedly trying to occupy parts of Hacienda Nene in Barangay Bulanon.

Duterte has tagged the New People’s Army in the farmer’s murder, adding that it was the rebel group’s style to kill their own members and put the blame on the government.

According to police investigation, the farmers were recruited by the National Federation of Sugarcane Workers, giving them a false promise that they will be given shares of Hacienda Nene if they succeed in occupying the land under the so-called bungkalan.

Last year, Duterte said the government will fast-track land distribution to minority groups to alleviate poverty and friction caused by land disputes.

He added that his administration intends to dispose of almost all government lands via land reform since it is the cornerstone of the government’s solution to the country’s longstanding communist insurgency problem./PN
