MANILA – A militant youth group called out President Rodrigo Duterte for his threats against University of the Philippines (UP) students who stage protests.
Duterte’s statement was “an unwelcome invitation for the Lumad students,” according to Anakbayan yesterday.
On Thursday, the President said UP students who continue holding protest actions against the government would be replaced by indigenous students.
“You do not go to school anymore. That’s people’s money. I’d be happy to reconfigure the view there,” he said in a speech in Davao City.
Duterte was referring to UP Diliman students who participated in the National Day of Walkout Against Tyranny and Dictatorship convened by several progressive organizations.
Anakbayan said “bright” Lumad students would not as easily give in to Duterte’s “gimmickry” after threatening to bomb their schools for allegedly teaching them to rebel against the government.
“Duterte regime will witness an even greater number of students walking out of their classes as they symbolically give up their slots and fight for the rights of the Filipino people,” said Anakbayan in a statement.
According to the group, Duterte “must do likewise in his spot in Malacañang and not wait for the revolutionary movement to drag him to his rightful slot in the rotting hell of fascist dictators.”/PN
