MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte should make public his real state of health after being absent from public engagements since Monday, opposition lawmakers said on Thursday.
There must be something wrong with Duterte. It is very unusual for him to be out from the public eye with the ongoing clashes in Marawi City, Magdalo party-list Rep. Rodolfo “Gary” Alejano said in a press statement.
“People cannot help but speculate about the status of the President’s health,” Alejano said. “Malacañang should be forthright in informing the public about this. The President’s health is a national security issue.”
Filipinos have the right to know the real condition of the President, said Ifugao Rep. Teodoro Baguilat.
“The most plausible explanation for a President going on leave for a week or more is health reasons. So it’s most likely that he had to undergo a medical checkup,” Baguilat said. “The results have to be disclosed to the public since it’s a national concern.”
Duterte has been absent from public engagements since Monday when he skipped the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies at the Luneta Park for the 119th Philippine Independence Day celebration.
Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella told a news conference on Thursday Duterte is in good condition and in fact in Malacañang but just resting.
Duterte was last seen publicly on Sunday evening when he met with the wives of the government troops who died in encounters with the Maute group in Marawi City on Friday last week./PN
