MANILA – A suspected bomber of the Maute group was arrested by law enforcers in Cagayan de Oro City on Thursday, the Police Regional Office 10 said.
Mohammad Noaim “Abu Jadid” Maute was caught around 7 a.m. in Barangay Macasandig, according to regional police director Chief Superintendent Agripino Javier.
A relative of the Maute brothers Omarkhayam and Abdullah, Maute reached Cagayan de Oro after pretending to be a teacher at Mindanao State University named Alfaiz P. Mamintal, said Javier.
“Siya ay trained bomber na pumunta dito,” Javier said in a televised media briefing. “Hindi pa niya inaamin kung ano ang target niya pero we presume that he wants to create destruction in some areas in CDO.”
“Gumagamit sila ng mga fake ID (identification card). Siguro iyon ang weakness kapag facial recognition. Pero hindi naman ito basta lang hinuli. Nagkaroon tayo ng verification,” the police official added.
But Mohammad Noaim Maute denied being a bomb expert and part of the terrorist group’s attack in Marawi City on May 23.
“Wala po akong kinalaman sa mga nangyayari ngayon,” a report on ABS-CBN quoted him as saying. “Iyong mga binintang nila sa akin na sinabi nilang bomb expert ako, hindi totoo iyon. Alam ko pong malinis iyong pangalan ko.”
Mohammad Noaim Maute was named in the arrest order the Department of National Defense issued against more than 100 suspected members, spies and couriers of the Abu Sayyaf, Maute and Maguid groups and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters./PN
