Happy New Year, everyone! With 2020 and 2021 behind us, we believe there’s nowhere to go but up.
We’re done with challenges (goodness knows we all are!), but here’s one that you’d like to keep – making your very own, achievable New Year’s Resolution list.
Hear us out! This isn’t about doing that complicated workout plan or losing a ton of weight, or even traveling to a new place every month (hello, Omicron). This is all about setting achievable goals in small, easy steps. After all, the real goal is a cliché-ish but true “new you”.
Here’s a list you could steal.
- Prioritize medical screenings and check-ups – Health is truly wealth. Nothing else matters (not that new gadget, that job, or the fancy vacay) if you’re ill. Seek age-appropriate screenings. Schedule the dreaded colonoscopy, ultrasound, or mammogram. Early intervention is key. Get a clean bill of health for yourself and your family. Inquire with your primary care provider or family doctor.
- Join the plantita and plantito trend – Research shows that the presence of indoor plants can lower stress levels. One study found that actively caring for plants can lower blood pressure and calm the autonomic nervous system. Plantitos and plantitas also claim that working near plants has improved their concentration and perceived air quality. Plant newbies can begin with succulents!
- Take the stairs when you can – If beginning a workout regimen isn’t feasible at the moment, take the stairs whenever you can. A published study by the Journal of Physiology & Behavior revealed that tired women got a higher energy boost when they climbed stairs for 10 minutes. It’s the equivalent of half a cup of coffee or a can of soda.
- Hydrate! – We know this, right? But we often neglect to chug enough during the day. Water becomes even more important when you get less than six hours of sleep. The magic formula is eight glasses. Check your urine. Too yellow? Drink up. Drinking plenty of water helps maximize physical performance and brain function. But do know that too much water can be detrimental too. Drinking too much too fast can cause an imbalance in sodium and other electrolytes.
- Chill – Probably the hardest thing to do after job loss, financial loss, death, sickness… among many others. But chilling need not be a vacation. It isn’t zoning out or shutting out the world either. It simply means letting go of all that anger and frustration. Begin by giving yourself a time-out. Remove yourself from the situation and then practice. relaxation techniques. When you’re ready, find workable solutions. Rinse. Repeat.
If you noticed, our shortlist has nothing to do with working out, changing your diet, getting therapy, or logging out of social media. The key is to get started with easy, achievable goals before moving on to the loftier ones.
