BORACAY – Two people died while a pregnant woman was critically injured after they were electrocuted in Barangay Yapak in this island.
High-voltage primary line wires of the Aklan Electric Cooperative (Akelco) fell on the ground for still unknown reasons around 9 a.m. on Nov. 5 near the house of the 41-year-old Rosita Salibio.
The incident left her daughter 7-year-old Arnelyn Salibio and neighbor 31-year-old Christina Matillano dead.
Matillano died on the spot, while the younger Salibio was declared “dead on arrival” in a medical clinic in Barangay Balabag.
Salibio, who is pregnant, was taken to a hospital in Kalibo, Aklan and was in critical condition as of this writing.
Akelco engineers are investigating the electrocution, said Manager Alexis Regalado, himself an engineer.
The Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers – Aklan chapter and the police’s Scene of Crime Operations are holding a separate probe.
Regalado said they expressed condolences to the victims’ families and are ready to extend assistance. “May possible fault ang linya,” he said.
An investigator for the Boracay Tourist Assistance Center said a primary Akelco line fell on the ground while the victims were standing 3 meters away from Salibio’s house near the main Yapak road.
Witnesses heard a loud explosion before the victims were electrocuted, said Police Officer 3 Reynan Thor Prado. The neighbors tried to help, but to no avail, he said.
At the time Matillano — a native of Barangay Pandan, Sta. Fe, Romblon and temporarily staying at the back of Salibio’s house — went to Salibio’s house to buy papaya, Prado said. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
