MANILA – Blackwater Elite took advantage of the sloppy Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings to win their PBA Philippine Cup game 94-77 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
John Paul Erram and Rey Mark Belo led with 22 points apiece while Allein Maliksi added 17 markers for Elite.
Blackwater tied with Kings, Phoenix Fuel Masters, NLEX Road Warriors, and Magnolia Hotshots on second place (2-1 win-loss) after the Friday night match.
“I told my team that it’s going to be something special if we will be able to hand Ginebra its first loss,” said Elite head coach Leo Isaac. “Luckily, we were able to do what we planned.”
Kings had an early lead 13-8 on inside hits by Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar. But Elite managed to tie the count at 19-all with hits from Erram, Raymar Jose and Belo.
Elite started to pull away in the second quarter, with conversions from Maliksi, Belo, James Ryan Sena, and Michael Digregorio turning a 26-all deadlock to a 41-33 edge at the half.
Blackwater raised its lead to double figures early in the third on inside hits by Erram and Sena. But Kings launched a huge run behind Slaughter, LA Tenorio and Earl Scottie Thompson to come to within 61-64.
Ginebra came to as close as 1 point early in the fourth until baskets from Maliksi, Digregorio and Belo, and an inside basket by Erram pushed Elite to its largest lead 94-77.
Slaughter finished with 20 points and 10 boards, while Tenorio added 16 points, six assists and five rebounds for Ginebra, which played without injured Solomon Mercado, Joe Devance and Arthur dela Cruz./PN
