MANILA – Rene “D’Challenger” Catalan of the Philippines is aiming for an impressive win against Xuewen Peng of China in ONE Championship: Kings of Courage on Jan. 20 at Jakarta Convention Center in Indonesia.
His aim – a chance to fight for a ONE world title – motivates the Iloilo native to defeat Peng, who was coming off a recent first-round stoppage of Phat Soda of Cambodia.
“Every fighter dreams to become a world champion. I really hope ONE Championship will give me an opportunity to fight for a title in the future,” said the Ilonggo mixed martial artist.
“This fight might be the door to a world title fight. Let us all hope for the best,” he added.
Since losing to former ONE strawweight world champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke in 2014, Catalan tallied three straight victories, the last one against Huo You Ga Bu, also of China.
“I still believe my striking is better [than Peng’s]. I am very comfortable in that aspect. If he wants to strike with me, it will be my pleasure,” Catalan said. “I will not stop winning until I get the ONE belt.”
Catalan will be the lone Filipino fighter on ONE’s year-opening event, which will be headlined by a women’s strawweight world championship match between Singapore’s Tiffany ‘No Chill’ Teo and China’s Xiong Jing Nan.
Also in the fight card is Indonesia’s Stefer Rahardian, who will face Pakistan’s Muhammad Imran. Vitaly Bigdash of Russia will take on Leandro Ataides of Brazil, while Marat Gafurov will fight Shinya Aoki./PN
