MANILA – Former senator Juan Ponce Enrile admitted that his children had used illegal drugs in their younger years.
Enrile was referring to former Cagayan Rep. Jack Enrile and businesswoman Katrina Ponce Enrile.
“In their youth, yes. A long time ago,” the veteran lawmaker revealed during an interview with broadcaster and economist Winnie Monson.
According to him, his son went to Hazelden Treatment Center in the United States “on his own” for drug rehabilitation, while his daughter “gave it up” when she was a teenager.
“(Jack) put himself under the regimen. I did not even know. He just told me about it. Even my wife (Cristina) did not know. On their own they gave up,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Enrile said he supports former President Ferdinand Marcos’ burial at Libingan ng mga Bayani.
All presidents, he said citing the law, have the right to be allowed a hero’s burial.
“That statement ‘Libingan ng mga Bayani’ is just the characterization of the place. It does not mean that all those people there are bayani. So, why has it become an issue?”
In the last May elections, Enrile supported for then Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s vice presidential bid. The son of the former president, however, lost to then Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo./PN
