MANILA – The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses moved on to the 21st University Games volleyball finals after a 25-15, 25-15, 23-25, 25-10 win over the De La Salle University Lady Spikers on Saturday at the Foundation University Gym in Dumaguete City.
The Golden Tigresses will face the University of Perpetual Help Lady Altas, which rallied from a 0-2 set deficit to oust the University of the East Lady Warriors in the other semis match, during the one-game finals at the Lamberto Macias Gym on late Sunday.
It was a tight start for both teams in the opening set with the Golden Tigresses holding on to a 17-14 lead. But they went on an 8-1 scoring run behind Ennajie Laure and Marivic Meneses to clinch the set.
The Golden Tigresses went on a strong start in the second frame for a 9-2 lead on back-to-back hits by Meneses. The Lady Spikers, however, kept it close at 18-13 but the Golden Tigresses pulled away anew behind Laure and Meneses for a 2-0 set lead.
The Golden Tigresses went on a strong start in the third set but the Lady Spikers refused to give up as it came to within 22-21. The Lady Spikers then took advantage of Golden Tigresses’ miscues down the stretch to snatch the set.
The Golden Tigresses were caught in a tight match early in the fourth for a slim 9-6 advantage. But it suddenly pulled away to a 17-9 lead behind Laure, Cherry Rondina and Alina Bicar before ending the match with an 8-1 blast.
Meanwhile, the National University Bulldogs and the Adamson University Falcons moved on to the finals of the men’s volleyball tournament after ousting the Far Eastern University Tamaraws and the University of Perpetual Help Altas, respectively, in the semifinals.
In men’s basketball, the University of Negros Occidental-Recolectos advanced to the championship round with a 69-59 victory over the Hercor College-Capiz during their semifinals match on Saturday night./PN
