BACOLOD City – A former soldier was accused of leading a robbery that left a neighbor dead in Barangay Inauayan, Cauayan, Negros Occidental.

The 32-year-old Bobby Castro of the same village was charged with murder and robbery.

He and two others fled after the incident, but Cauayan police caught Castro in a manhunt and detained him at their station.

His alleged cohorts — Ramon Gonzales and Brando Arteo of the same barangay — remained at large as of this writing.

Police failed to recover the P18,000 cash the suspects took from 30-year-old Reynaldo Albaña and his 77-year-old mother Rosalinda.

Castro shot Albaña on May 13. The victim died of multiple gunshot wounds, said Chief Inspector Ruben Pajarito, Cauayan police chief.

The suspects left the mother unhurt. It was not immediately clear why Albaña was carrying that amount of money.

Castro was a former officer of the Philippine Army’s 61st Infantry Battalion based in Cauayan but was dismissed from the service for allegedly using prohibited drugs, said Pajarito./PN
