MANILA – The military identified the “stability of Mindanao” as primary basis for its recommendation to either extend or end martial law in the region.
President Rodrigo Duterte placed Mindanao under martial law via Proclamation No. 216 on May 23 after Islamic State-allied extremists laid siege on Marawi City.
Voting 261-18, the 17th Congress granted Duterte’s request to extend the martial law and the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus in the region until Dec. 31.
“The stability of Mindanao will perhaps be the primary basis of any kind of request for extension,” the Armed Forces spokesman Major General Restituto Padilla said.
“Assessments will be made at an opportune time before the end of the duration provided for martial law on the end of the year,” Padilla said.
According to the officer, the Armed Forces’ recommendation will be among the bases for the extension or termination of martial law.
“It (recommendation) will be submitted prior to the (Dec. 31) deadline,” he said. (PNA)
