MANILA – Gilas Pilipinas hopes to score a second straight win in the 2019 FIBA World Cup qualifiers when it hosts Chinese Taipei at 7:30 tonight at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Head coach Vincent “Chot” Reyes hopes his players will do better than their inconsistent showing against Japan last Friday in Tokyo. The Filipinos won that game 77-71.
“We were good against Japan but we have to be better,” Reyes told Sports5.
“Against Japan, there’s a mixture of relief and apprehension. Iyong feeling na parang nakahinga ka ng kaunti. Pero may kahalong apprehension kasi masama iyong nilaro natin,” he said.
“We have a lot of adjustments to make,” Reyes stressed. “The last time out we had a very bad 34 percent field goal shooting. We also missed a lot of free throws. We hope not to repeat that against Chinese Taipei.”
Seen to lead the host team are Andray Blatche, June Mar Fajardo, Jayson Castro, Matthew Wright, Japeth Aguilar, Calvin Abueva, Troy Rosario, and Roger Pogoy.
Over at Chinese Taipei, which was coming off a 66-104 defeat to Australia, leading the squad are Quincy Davis, Cheng Liu, Yu-an Chiang, and Kuan-Chuan Cheng.
After the Chinese Taipei match, Gilas will have a lengthy break before returning to the second window of the qualifier in February 2018 against Australia.
“Sa ngayon, we cannot celebrate yet. We have to focus on the game at hand,” Reyes said.
“I told the players do whatever you want on Monday evening, after the game in Manila,” he added. “But for now, all of our effort has to be toward Chinese Taipei.”/PN
