MANILA – Far Eastern University Tamaraws went on a furious finishing run to escape with a 64-61 win over University of the East Red Warriors in the UAAP Season 79 men’s seniors basketball on Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Trailing 59-54 halfway through the final frame, Tamaraws scored five unanswered points — free throws by Prince Orizu and Wendell Comboy and a jumper, also by Comboy — to tie the score at 59-all.
Another free throw by Comboy helped Tamaraws surge to 60-59 before a three-pointer by Axel Inigo extended the lead, 63-59. Red Warriors came to within three points but a free throw by Raymar Jose sealed Tamaraws’ win.
Inigo led the way with 16 points, including three three-point baskets, for the defending champion Tamaraws, which snapped a three-game losing skid to improve to a 9-5 win-loss slate.
Jose and Richard Escoto chipped in with 11 points apiece, while Comboy contributed 10 markers for Tamaraws, which kept its hopes for a “twice-to-beat” incentive alive with the win.
For Tamaraws to have a shot for a playoff for the “twice-to-beat” advantage, it must wish that Adamson University Falcons beats Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles, whose battle was ongoing at press time.
“It was never in my mind getting a twice-to-beat. If it comes, it comes,” said Tamaraws head coach Nash Racela. “Ang importante is we’re in the Final Four. I know that we could compete and beat the other teams.”
Paul Varilla top-scored with 13 points, while Philip Manalang, Emil Palma and Rey Acuno had eight points each for Red Warriors, which tied University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers at last place with a 3-11 slate./PN
