MANILA – After letting go of its key players in consecutive phantom trades a few weeks ago, the Mahindra Floodbuster is making a last ditch effort to build a competitive lineup in time for the 2016-2017 PBA Philippine Cup.
The Floodbuster made its first move by acquiring the services of Nico Salva from the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings in exchange for a future second round draft rights yesterday.
According to Floodbuster first assistant coach Chris Gavina the arrival of Salva is huge for his squad as he can fill the void left by Rommel Niño Canaleta, Aldrech Ramos and Paolo Taha, who were traded away to the other teams.
“Mahindra is the perfect team for Nico to show his wares,” Gavina said. “He is a legitimate stretch four and possible threat from the outside. Possibly, Nico has the capability to help us fill in that role.”
“Nico is a guy who we think can thrive in our culture. He is a character guy, a guy in our radar ever since he was with the GlobalPort (Batang Pier),” added the deputy of Floodbuster playing coach Manny Pacquiao.
Salva, a five-time champion with the Ateneo Blue Eagles in UAAP, will be playing for his fourth team in the league after previously suiting up for Batang Pier, Barako Bull Energy Cola and the Kings.
Salva, a known deadly scorer from inside and outside, was supposed to play a huge role for Kings head coach Tim Cone but lost his minutes with the entry of Chris Ellis, Aljon Mariano and rookie Kevin Ferrer.
“I am delighted for him (that he got traded) because I know he wants to get out and spread his wings and get playing time,” Cone said. “Nico’s got all the skills and the personality that we like, but we’re deep in his position.”/PN
