MANILA – Far Eastern University Tamaraws prevented a late fight-back by University of the East Red Warriors to score 90-83 in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball yesterday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Ron Dennison led the way with 16 points, on seven-of-13 shooting from the field, for Tamaraws, which moved up to second place in the standings (1-1).
Prince Orizu added double-double 15 points and 16 rebounds while Richard Escoto, Barkley Ebona and Arvin Tolentino had 11 points each for FEU to bounce back from its 90-95 loss to De La Salle University Green Archers on Sunday.
Tamaraws waxed hot early in the game on conversions from Orizu, Dennison and Barkley Ebona to pull to a 30-11 advantage early in the second quarter on back-to-back hits by Escoto.
FEU was still up 59-46 early in the third frame when Red Warriors countered with a huge run behind veteran Clark Derige to come to within 71-80 midway in the final quarter.
Tamaraws came up with a huge response from Dennison, who unloaded 6 consecutive points to increase their lead 88-76 with over two minutes left.
“Medyo malayo pa kami. We still have a lot of things to work on,” said Tamaraws head coach Olsen Racela. “Mabuti na lang at nandiyan ang depensa namin kaya nanalo kami.”
Derige top-scored with 22 points, including two 3-point baskets, while Alvin Pasaol added 13 for Red Warriors, which suffered its second straight defeat./PN
