MANILA – Far Eastern University Tamaraws turned on the heat in the fourth quarter to score 78-65 against University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball yesterday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Holding on to a slim 49-48 lead, Tamaraws opened the final quarter with a 14-0 scoring run on back-to-back triples by Arvin Tolentino and fast break hits by Axel Inigo to build a 63-48 lead.
Despite consecutive points from Tigers, Tamaraws countered with another rally from Wendelino Comboy, Richard Escoto and RJ Ramirez to build its largest lead in the game 69-53.
Tolentino led the way with 15 points, with 11 markers coming in the second half, for FEU, which moved up to solo third place with a 2-2 win-loss record.
Ron Dennison also had 15 markers while rookie Jasper Parker and Kenneth Tuffin contributed 8 markers apiece for Tamaraws.
“It’s hard to get wins in the UAAP. We have to grind it out,” said Tamaraws head coach Rodericko Racela. “Good thing Arvin and the other guys stepped up in the second half.”
Tigers had a strong start 22-12 on 7 straight points by Carlos Escalambre but Tamaraws carved its way back in the game in the third frame behind Dennison and Comboy to surge 49-48.
Jeepy Faundo finished with double-double 16 points and 11 rebounds while Jordan Sta. Ana added 11 markers for UST, which remained in last place (0-4)./PN
