MANILA – The Philippine delegation captured an early gold medal in the 29th Southeast Asian Games on Thursday in men’s four lawn balls in Kuala Lumpur.
Emmanuel Portacio, Curte Robert Guarin, Leoncio Carreon Jr., and Roland Lising defeated host Malaysia 16-14. Thailand brought home the bronze medal.
In lawn bowls, the objective is to roll biased balls so they stop close to a smaller ball called a “jack” or “kitty.” It is played on a bowling green, which may be flat or convex or uneven.
The Philippines also managed to sneak out two gold medals on Wednesday evening, with Aries Toledo winning the decathlon event and Trenten Anthony Beram ruling the men’s 200m run.
As of press time, the Philippines remained in sixth place in the medal tally with 11 gold, 16 silver and 20 bronze medals behind Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia.
Toledo ruled his event with 6,849 points, beating Thailand’s Suttisak Singkon – the 2017 Asian Athletics Championship gold medalist – and Vietnam’s Bui Van Su.
Beram topped the 200m run with 20.84 seconds to defeat Jirapong Meenapara of Thailand, who had 21.22 seconds, and Thevarr Gunasegaran of Malaysia, who posted 21.26 seconds.
Settling for silver medal were Mark Harry Diones (men’s triple jump), Marco Vilog (men’s 800m run), John Paul Bejar (men’s 55kg kumite), and Mario Fernandez (boxing).
Bronze medalists were Dennis Orcollo and Warren Kiamco (9-ball doubles), the women’s 4x200m relay swimming team, Jasmine Alkhaldi (women’s 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly), Lois Go (women’s golf), and Terese Amparo (shooting)./PN
