MANILA – Kicking off its 29th Southeast Asian Games campaign on a high note, Philippine volleybelles beat Malaysia 25-18, 25-11, 25-16 on Thursday at the MITEC Hall 11 in Kuala Lumpur.
Jaja Santiago led the way with 13 points – 11 attacks, a block and a service ace – while Ilongga Aby Maraño added 11 markers to assure the Philippines of a semifinals seat.
Low Mei Cing finished with 15 points – on 11 attacks, three service aces and a block – for the host team, which is now out of the competition.
Currently on top of Pool B (1-0 win-loss), the Philippines hopes to continue its winning run this afternoon against Vietnam, which the national team defeated in the AVC in Biñan, Laguna two weeks ago.
From a slow start, the Philippines pulled away to an 18-12 edge on back-to-back conversions by Jovelyn Gonzaga. Malaysia rallied to within 14-18 but the Philippines pulled away anew behind Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Santiago.
The Filipinas opened the second set with 8-0 on service aces by Kim Fajardo. After consecutive points by Malaysia, the Philippines went on to build a double-digit edge behind Maraño and Pontillas for a 2-0 set win.
The Philippines continued its momentum in the third set 16-6 on hits by Maraño. Malaysia trimmed the deficit to a single digit but the Filipinas countered with a finishing run on hits by Maika Ortiz and Alyssa Valdez./PN
