ILOILO City – Fire gutted four houses in Zone 5, Barangay Don Esteban, Lapuz district yesterday.
Two of the four houses were totally burned.
The fire started around 9:35 a.m. at the house of Noel Alcain.
The house was made of light materials thus the fire quickly spread to three adjacent houses, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection’s (BFP) Senior Fire Officer 1 Rolen Gimena.
One of the houses was owned by Alcain’s brother, Roberto.
A lit but unattended candle likely started the fire. Fire investigators discovered that Maria Granada, mother of the Alcains, lighted a candle and prayed for a grandchild who was taking the civil service examination.
“She left the candle on the altar then went out,” said Gimena.
The altar was made of plywood and covered with cloth.
The two totally burned houses belonged to the Alcain brothers.
The partially-damaged houses were owned by Simon Villa and Arlie Magestral.
BFP firefighters completely put out the fire around 9:55 a.m.
The damage was estimated to have reached P300 thousand./PN
