ILOILO – Seventeen local government units (LGUs) received P100,000 each from the provincial government for the closure and rehabilitation of their dumping sites.
The 17 recipients were Sara, Banate, Concepcion, Ajuy, Santa Barbara, Tubungan, Pototan, Cabatuan, New Lucena, Bingawan, Dueñas, Dumangas, Lambunao, San Enrique, Zarraga, Mina, and Passi City.
The recent distribution of financial assistance was the highlight of the Provincial Solid Waste Management Board (PSWMB) Meeting held at Casa Real in Iloilo City.
PSWMB is composed of 43 LGUs in the province, select national government agencies, as well as non-government organizations (NGOs).
LGUs are primarily responsible for the implementation and enforcement of the provisions of Republic Act (RA) 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 within their respective jurisdictions.
RA 9003 mandates that the LGUs shall form boards responsible for preparing, submitting and implementing solid waste plans.
Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. called on the local chief executives to address solid waste problems in their areas before it becomes worse.
He said the 26 remaining LGUs will get their financial assistance next year.
“This is just a small amount but I hope this can help in your respective solid waste management programs,” Defensor quipped.
The governor also announced the revival of the search for outstanding LGU on solid waste management program next year.
The activity aims to motivate LGUs in improving their solid waste management practices and programs. (ECGarcia, Capitol News/PN)
