MANILA – The Department of Health (DOH) has tallied 463 fireworks-related injuries from Dec. 21, 2017 to Jan. 5 this year. The figure was 27 percent lower than the record in the previous monitoring period.
It has not tallied any case of fireworks ingestion, stray bullet injuries or deaths, according to DOH secretary Francisco Duque III.
“We are thankful to everyone that supported the DOH’s anti-firecrackers campaign,” Duque said in a statement. “We will continue to work with the agencies concerned to further enforce our campaign.”
Among the 463 injuries in the DOH’s final record, the National Capital Region had 248. Western Visayas, Calabarzon and Ilocos Region had 45 each; Central Luzon, 28, and Central Visayas and Bicol, 15.
Seventy-nine percent of the injuries were males while around 77 percent occurred on the streets. Fifty-five percent were active users when the blast took place.
Hand injuries were the most common (49 percent), followed by those on the eyes (17 percent), forearm and arm (14 percent), head (13 percent), and legs (9 percent).
Illegal firecracker piccolo remains to be the most dangerous firecracker, causing 33 percent of the cases. Kwitis caused 12 percent. Unknown fireworks (11 percent), luces (6 percent) and fountain (5 percent) were also culprits.
“We are reminding all those who have incurred some form of injury due to fireworks to please consult your nearest health facility for proper wound care and management,” Duque said.
“Together with other authorities of the government, we shall intensify our drive against fireworks-related injuries until we achieve our target of zero [cases],” he added./PN
