BACOLOD City – Floods brought by the enhanced southwest monsoon resulted to P8,527,200 worth of damage to agricultural products in Negros Occidental, according to the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist.
Damaged crops were mostly palay, said Provincial Agriculturist Japhet Masculino.
The total amount of damage was based on the progress reports submitted by local government units of areas hit by floods across the province last week.
San Enrique has the highest production loss of P5,040,696, followed by Valladolid with P1,599,928, Sipalay City with P1,391,200, and Bago City, P495,678.
Masculino said a total of 771.95 hectares of rice plantation were destroyed leaving 579 farmers affected.
He said the cost may increase as he has yet to receive progress reports from areas in the northern part of the province.
But the damage may be minimal, Masculino said.
Rice plantations in northern Negros Occidental are located in elevated areas, he explained.
Moreover, Masculino assured that the provincial government will provide affected farmers assistance, like rice seeds.
The provincial agriculturist also encouraged farmers to avail themselves of crop insurance services./PN
