BACOLOD City – Floods brought by torrential rains early this week caused P4.063 million worth of damage to rice plantations in southern Negros Occidental.
Some 143.79 hectares of rice crops were damaged in Himamaylan City and 326 farmers were affected, initial figures in a report released by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist on Tuesday showed.
At least 35 families in Cadiz City in northern Negros evacuated due to heavy rains.
Zeaphard Gerhart Caelian, head of Provincial Disaster Management Program Division, said families from Barangay Tiglawan fled their homes and sought refuge at the Paniqui-on Elementary School.
A number of families in Sagay City also evacuated due to torrential rains, Caelian said.
The state weather bureau Pagasa hoisted a yellow heavy rainfall warning over Negros provinces but lifted it Tuesday afternoon.
The Philippine Coast Guard also cancelled trips of all small vessels in Negros Occidental due to the gale warning.
Local disaster management offices continued to closely monitor the weather. Low-lying areas were being watched for possible flooding and mountainous areas for landslides, Caelian said. (PNA)
