BACOLOD City – Bishop Emeritus Vicente Navarra made a “universal call for holiness” among families and couples during a sendoff mass for the pilgrim relics of Saints Louis and Zelie Martin.
The relics of the Roman Catholic Church’s first-ever couple saint were at the Diocese of Bacolod from Sunday to Tuesday.
Navarra said the relics’ visit was “a call for Catholic and non-Catholic families alike to be holy, a loving and humble union of spouses, and living out what is true and just in front of our children, our neighbors and others.”
The bishop called on the young to pray for their parents and the couples to cling to each other.
“When you cling to each other, you know that you have God,” Navarra said during the Tuesday mass at the San Sebastian Cathedral.
The relics were turned over to the Diocese of Bacolod from the Diocese of San Carlos on Jan. 15. It stayed here until the 17th.
During the welcome Eucharistic celebration on Sunday at the Bacolod Carmelite Monastery, Bishop Patricio Buzon said the couple saint remind us that every couple should be holy.
Saints Louis and Zelie Martin were “an extraordinary couple who lived their family life in total dependence to God and handed down to their children the same strong spirituality,” said Buzon.
The couple saint had five daughters who “dedicated their lives to God in religious life, the youngest of whom was St. Therese of the Child Jesus, a Doctor of the Catholic Church,” the bishop said.
The reliquary was airlifted from the Bacolod-Silay Airport around 11 a.m. on Tuesday on board a Philippine Air Force Fokker F-27 plane en route to the Diocese of Imus in Cavite, where the Luzon leg of the visit starts before the relics are returned to France on Feb. 28./PN
