MANILA – Flying V Thunder continued its strong start in the 2017 PBA D-League Foundation Cup after scoring a 107-96 victory over Wangs Basketball Couriers on Tuesday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Gabriel Banal led the way with 29 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists. The Thunder tallied its third straight victory in as many outings to move up to solo first place in the standings.
Jeron Teng chipped in with 20 markers, six rebounds, and four assists, while Aris Dionisio, Thomas Torres, and Hans Thiele contributed 14, 12 and 10 points, respectively, for Thunder.
After a slow start, Thunder was finally able to get the breathing room in the second half as Banal started the decisive 11-0 scoring run to finish the third period and grab an 86-80 advantage.
Couriers tried to come back in the final quarter but Thunder managed to pull away again behind the conversions of Banal, Teng, Dionisio and Jarelan Tampus to clinch its third straight win.
“Gab was consistent all throughout the game. He was our spark in the second half,” said Thunder head coach Eric Altamirano. “But all-in-all, it was a collective effort from our players.”
In the other match, Aspirants Cup champions Cignal HD Hawkeyes recovered from its first defeat this conference with an 86-76 domination over AMA Online Education Titans.
Davon Potts had his best game this conference with 17 points, while John Murphy Raymundo added 16 markers for Hawkeyes, which bounced back from a shock 66-65 defeat to Marinerong Pilipino last week./PN
