MANILA – Western Visayas spikers Jovelyn Gonzaga, Abigail Maraño, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Genevieve Casugod lead the 12-woman national women’s volleyball team that will compete in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games.

Aside from the four, other players included in the roster were Alyssa Valdez, Mika Reyes, Jaja Santiago, Denisse Lazaro, Kim Fajardo, Rhea Dimaculangan, Maika Ortiz and Frances Molina.

Named as reserves by head coach Francis Vicente were former national squad team captain Rachel Anne Daquis and De La Salle University Lady Spikers’ libero Dawn Macandili.

Among the notable deletions from the national team were Marivic Meneses, Lourdes Clemente, Kath Arado, Roselle Baliton, Myla Pablo, Gretchel Soltones, Kim Dy and Elaine Kasilag.

Sources told Panay News that the coaching staff of the national women’s volleyball team had a hard time forming the squad with the 18 talented players from the pool all deserving to be in the team.

“Matinding deliberation talaga ‘yung nangyari dahil lahat naman nung unang 18 na pinili ni coach Francis ay deserving to be part of the team pero 14 lang talaga ang mapipili,” the source said.

The country participated in the Southeast Asian Games for the first time in a decade in 2015. But the team led by Maraño, Daquis, Santiago, Gonzaga and Valdez failed to land a medal finish.

Meanwhile, the men’s volleyball team will be composed of Relan Taneo, Geuel Asia, Alnakran Abdilla, Mark Alfafara, Bryan Bagunas, Alden Cabaron, Reyson Fuentes, Bonjomar Castel, Herschel Ramos, Jack Kalingling, John Vic de Guzman and Greg Dolor. Reserves are John Carascal and Peter Quiel./PN
