MANILA – Foton Tornadoes continued their impressive run in the 2017 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference with a 25-22, 16-25, 25-22, 25-14 win over Cignal HD Spikers at the San Juan Arena.
Jaja Santiago led the way with 26 points — on 18 attacks, four blocks and four service aces — for Tornadoes, which kept their hold of the top spot in Pool C with a 4-0 win-loss record after the Saturday night game.
Ennajie Laure added 16 markers, while Maika Ortiz and Christine Joy Rosario combined for 14 points for Foton.
Meanwhile F2 Logistics Cargo Movers cruised to its second straight victory by sweeping Cocolife Asset Managers, 25-16, 25-12, 25-16, and maintained its hold of the top spot in Pool D with a 2-2 win-loss slate.
From a tight start early in the opening set, Tornadoes suddenly pulled away to build a 23-19 lead on a crosscourt hit by Laure. HD Spikers rallied to within 23-22 but a block by Santiago and an ace by Rosario handed the set to Foton.
After losing the second set, Tornadoes bounced back in the third to build a 23-17 lead on hits by Santiago and Laure. Cignal rallied to within 24-22 before Heather Guino-o closed the set for Foton on a block.
Tornadoes waxed hot early in the fourth set for an 11-5 lead but HD Spikers responded to cut the deficit to 2. Santiago, Laure and Ortiz then led Tornadoes assault to pull away to a 22-14 lead and never looked back.
“I come and see every match and analyze Cignal,” said Tornadoes head coach Moro Branislav. “Cignal is a very good team and today my players played well. This is a big win for Foton.”
Guimaras native Jovelyn Gonzaga led the way with 14 points, while Honey Royce Tubino added 11 markers for HD Spikers, which slid down to second place with a 3-1 win-loss mark./PN
