ILOILO City – Today, residents of Barangay Santa Cruz, Arevalo district will undergo orientation on dengue and Zika.

“They will be taught about the diseases and the mosquitoes carrying the virus that cause them,”Barangay Captain Felix Octavio told Panay News in a phone interview.

The Department of Health (DOH) Region 6 and the City Health Office (CHO) will conduct the orientation at the village chapel around 9 a.m.
More or less 3,700 people live in Santa Cruz, Arevalo. Octavio hopes everyone will attend the orientation.

There were two cases of Zika in the barangay, the DOH said.

They were among the seven Zika cases in the city. Four were from Barangay Benedicto, Jaro and one was in Barangay San Juan, Molo.
As for dengue, Octavio said his barangay has five cases.

“Akon na personal nga isip, base man sa akon constituentskag sa nagapangayo referrals,” he told Panay News.

Households in Santa Cruz, Arevalo may be subjected to spraying and fogging, too, but the villagers’ permission must be sought first, said Octavio.
From what Octavio has gathered, the DOH and the CHO could no longer contact the two villagers who tested positive for Zika.

“The patients were switching off their mobile phones. Maybe they were ashamed,” the barangay captain said.

Dengue is caused by day-biting mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus) that breed in clear, stagnant water.

It causes fever that lasts about six to seven days, with a smaller peak of fever at the trailing end of the disease. Clinically, the platelet count will drop.

Patients may also suffer from gastritis with some combination of associated abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
Zika virus is transmitted by the day-biting Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

It is prompting worldwide concern because of its connection to a neurological birth disorder — microcephaly — and its rapid spread across the globe.
