BACOLOD City — Mayor Greg Gasataya is pushing for the establishment of barangay-level beauty pageants to strengthen grassroots participation in the Miss Bacolod MassKara (MBM) competition after a candidate representing Barangay Singcang-Airport won this year’s crown.
Macy Alaine E. Albarico, 24, was crowned Miss Bacolod MassKara 2026 during the pageant night held at STI West Negros University (STIWNU) on October 11, besting 14 other candidates.
Gasataya congratulated all 15 candidates, describing the barangay representation system as a significant improvement that has strengthened community involvement in the city’s premier beauty pageant.
He said having candidates represent their respective barangays gives residents a greater stake in the competition and encourages them to rally behind their representatives during the annual MassKara Festival.
“For me, this was a good decision. In the past, the candidates competed as an individual. This time, they carry the name of the barangay they represent. This has elevated community participation because each of us belongs to a barangay,” Gasataya said.
The mayor expressed hope that barangays would organize their own pageants to select representatives for next year’s citywide competition.
Under the proposed approach, winners of local pageants could advance to the MBM, providing aspiring candidates with opportunities to showcase their talents while promoting community pride and unity.
Gasataya also cited the packed venue during the coronation night as a sign of public enthusiasm, saying the turnout had raised expectations for next year’s production.
Albarico received P150,000, a sash and a bouquet for winning the title. She also took home the Miss Congeniality award.
However, Barangay Singcang-Airport Captain Rosinie Distrito clarified reports that Albarico was an elected Sangguniang Kabataan kagawad of the barangay.
Distrito said Albarico represented the community because her aunt resides there and she occasionally stays in the area.
Julie Mikayla A. Borja of Barangay Mansilingan was named first runner-up, receiving P100,000, a sash and a bouquet. She also won four special awards: Best in Festival Costume, Best in Gown, Best in Talent and Darling of Social Media.
Ma. Zonora Ellyssa Curaza of Barangay Sum-ag placed second runner-up and received P50,000, a sash and a bouquet.
Rounding out the Top Five were Kyla C. Aligaga of Barangay Pahanocoy and Daniella Louisse B. Merelos of Barangay 32.
Beyond the competition, MBM 2026 highlighted Bacolod’s cultural identity and promoted women’s empowerment and self-determination.
According to Bacolod Gugma Foundation Inc., the pageant’s creative direction drew inspiration from local landmarks and symbols, with the Bacolod City Public Plaza serving as the inspiration for the Evening Gown Competition./PN
