MANILA – Gilas Pilipinas barged into the finals of the 29th Southeast Asian Games men’s basketball after scoring a hard earned 68-60 win over Singapore in the knockout semifinals last night at the MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Jeth Troy Rosario led the way with double-double 14 points and 10 rebounds for the national men’s basketball team.
Gilas will face either Thailand or Indonesia in the gold medal game at 8:15 p.m. tonight.
Christian Standhardinger also had double-double 13 points and 11 rebounds while Chris Michael Tolomia and Baser Amer combined for 18 points.
Gilas will be aiming for its 18th SEA Games gold medal.
It jumped to an early 12-3 lead on hits by Standhardinger, Rosario and Amer. Singapore, however, responded with a huge run to come to within 15-12 before Gilas pulled away to 21-12 on five straight points by Kobe Paras.
Singapore countered with another rally to pull to within 22-21 but Gilas unloaded a 10-0 scoring run on three-point conversions by Amer and Rosario to build a 32-24 halftime lead.
Gilas went on a strong start in the third quarter behind Standhardinger and Rosario to build a 41-26 advantage. Singapore leaned on its three-point conversions to come to within 49-42 at the end of the period.
Singapore managed to pull even closer in the fourth quarter at five points. Gilas, however, managed to increase the advantage at on conversions by Standhardinger, Bobby Ray Parks Jr. and Tolomia.
Wenquiang Russel Low top-scored with 14 points while Wei Long Wong chipped in with 12 markers, including two three-point conversions, for the Singaporean team.
