MANILA – The Philippine Superliga-F2 Logistics slid down to eighth place in the 2016 FIVB Women’s Club World Championship following a 25-16, 25-23, 25-20 loss to Bangkok Glass on Sunday night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Ashley Frazier led the way with 12 points, while Thi Ngok Hoa Nguyen and Thidarat Phongwechai chipped in 11 markers apiece for Bangkok Glass, which salvaged a supposedly win-less campaign in the tournament.
Bangkok Glass started strong in the opening set as it surged to a 15-9 lead. The edge grew to 19-11 following a Frazier hit. The PSL-F2 Logistics came to within 21-15 but attacks by Niemer handed the set to Bangkok Glass.
Both teams had a tight exchange in the second frame with Bangkok Glass only up 11-9. The PSL-F2 Logistics responded as it tied the count at 23-all but two straight errors by the home team handed a 2-0 set lead to the Thai squad.
The PSL-F2 Logistics became aggressive early in the third frame behind Jaja Santiago and Rachel Anne Daquis but the Bangkok Glass pulled away at 16-11. Despite a mini-run by the home team, the Thais uncorked consecutive hits for a straight set win.
Santiago top-scored with 11 points, on nine attacks, one block and one service ace, for the PSL-F2 Logistics, which ended its first-ever stint in the prestigious tournament with no wins to show.
Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul became the first back-to-back champion in the international league with a 25-19, 20-25, 25-19, 22-25, 15-11 victory over the Pomi Casalmaggiore in the championship match.
Tatiana Kosheleva of Russia led the way with 23 points, while Tijana Boskovic added 17 markers for the Turkish squad, which has not lost a match in the tournament since the season-opener of the 2015 edition.
Vakifbank Istanbul, meanwhile, displayed its vaunted firepower in the deciding set to clobber European champion Volero Zurich, 25-14, 21-25, 25-22, 25-11, and cop the bronze medal.
Rexona-Sesc Rio, on the other hand, went through the wringer before pulling off a masterful conquest of Hisamitsu Springs Kobe, 20-25, 25-22, 25-15, 30-32, 15-7, to settle for 5th place./PN
