BACOLOD City – The government must resolve the issues in the sugar industry or else Makabayan will act on them.

Chairman Neri Colmenares said this yesterday at the launch of the Negros Island Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries and Small Planters Alliance (NIASPA) at the BAYS Center.

They will bring the issues to Congress, the court and on the streets, Colmenares said.

These “whammy” issues are the imposition of the general agreement on tariffs and trade by the World Trade Organization, the import of high-fructose corn syrup, and the P10 excise tax on sugar-based beverages.

“Small and big planters will suffer if these issues are not resolved. Negros will suffer,” Colmenares said./PN
