MANILA – De La Salle University Green Archers made a quick work of University of the East Red Warriors 99-78 in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball on Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Green Archers, the defending champion, kept its hold of the second place (9-2) and is now assured of a playoff slot.
Ben Mbala led the way with double-double 25 points and 17 rebounds, rookie Leonard Santillan had 14 points and 11 boards, while Ricci Rivero and Justine Baltazar had 13 points each for DLSU.
Green Archers opened the match with a 14-4 lead on inside hits by Mbala but Red Warriors rallied to come close 16-18. La Salle pulled away 26-18 on back-to-back treys by Rivero and Kirell Montalbo.
La Salle started the second frame with a 40-24 lead on a Baltazar hit. Red Warriors clawed its way back 29-40 but treys from Montalbo and Aljun Melecio allowed Green Archers to build a 53-34 gap at the half.
Green Archers continued to pull away in the third on inside baskets by Mbala and built its largest lead 74-47 on a triple by Baltazar. UE went on another run to come to within 65-79 early in the fourth.
Conversions by Jollo Go and Rivero allowed Green Archers to quickly bring its lead back to 20 points. Red Warriors had its last run 74-88 before Green Archers sealed the win with hits from Rivero.
Alvin Pasaol top-scored with 23 points and nine rebounds while Mark Olayon added 18 markers for Red Warriors, which dropped to seventh place (3-8)./PN
