GUIMARAS – This island-province supports the adoption of Gross National Happiness (GNH) which measures prosperity by looking into the spiritual, physical, social and environmental health of its citizens.
The GNH adoption was highlighted during the Environmental Summit on Nov. 7 at Guimaras State College Convention Center, Mclain, Buenavista.
The activity, which gathered concerned stakeholders, aimed to formulate plans, projects and programs toward the new index of development. Priority interventions to achieve the primary program of Environment secretary Regina Lopez on Area Development Framework – which is anchored on GNH – to increase the quality of life were also discussed.
According to Vicente A. Sardina of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the activity also challenged people’s organizations to improve their livelihood.
Adopted from Bhutan, GNH now serves as a measure in appraising the happiness level of its citizens. It also contributes to the national gross domestic product of the country./PN
