GUIMARAS — The Province of Guimaras and the Municipality of Buenavista were recognized in the 2025 Local Legislative Award and Search for Excellence in Local Governance (EXCELL) of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region 6 for outstanding programs promoting tourism and public safety.

The provincial government of Guimaras received the Excellence in Tourism, Heritage Development, Culture, and Arts award for its flagship event, the Guimaras National Cycling Fest.

The festival is part of the Sports Tourism and Development Program of the Provincial Economic and Development Office (PEDO) and is designed to position Guimaras as the “Bike Paradise of the Philippines” and a leading destination for sports and adventure tourism.

Officials said the cycling festival also aims to encourage the public to adopt an active and healthy lifestyle while promoting the province’s scenic routes and tourism potential.

Meanwhile, the Municipality of Buenavista was awarded Excellence in Safety, Peace, and Order for its programs “Tanod Ko, Karatedo (Bantay Lakas)” and Project H.E.A.L. (Help Extend A Life).

The initiatives highlight the local government’s strong commitment to strengthening public safety, enhancing community resilience, and improving health services through community-based interventions.

The annual EXCELL Awards recognize local government units that demonstrate excellence in legislation and governance, and that implement effective programs addressing the needs of their communities.

DILG-6 said the awards aim to encourage innovation, accountability, and good governance among local legislative bodies in Western Visayas. (PIA)
