BACOLOD City – One of the two labor sector representatives to the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) in Western Visayas urged employers to implement the mandated daily wage increase set to take effect on March 16.
“To achieve industrial harmony, we are urging establishments to implement the wage increase,” said Wennie Sancho, secretary-general of the General Alliance of Workers Association in Negros Occidental.
Wage Order No. 23 grants a P15 to P25 daily minimum wage increase for workers in Western Visayas and Negros Occidental.
RTWPB Region 6 approved the increase on Dec. 15, 2016 yet and the National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC) affirmed the order just this Feb. 17.
The wage hike petition was filed by the Philippine Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Workers’ Union (PACIWU-TUCP) in DOLE Negros Occidental last August 2016. It wanted the daily wage for commercial establishments employing more than 10 employees be P399.84 a day, an increase of P101.34 from P298.50.
Its other proposed rates were as follows:
* for plantations with more than 24 hectares – increase the daily wage by P90.61
* workers on non-plantations and plantations with 24 hectares and below – increase the daily wage by P86.87.
However, the wage board approved a much lower increase. The new rate for non-agriculture, industrial and commercial establishments employing more than 10 workers is P323.50, which has an increase of P25 from the current P298.509.
Those employing less than 10 workers are mandated to pay an increase of P15 – from P256.50 to P271.50.
In the agriculture sector, the daily minimum wage will now be P281.50 and P271.50 for plantation and non-plantation workers, respectively. The increase is P15, from the previous P266.50 and P256.50.
The new wage order covers all minimum wage earners in the private sector in Western Visayas regardless of their position, designation or status of employment, and irrespective of the method they are paid.
The wage order does not cover household or domestic workers, persons in the personal service of another, and workers of duly registered Barangay Micro Business Enterprises with certificate of authority pursuant to Republic Act 9178. (PNA)
